Fiber Reinforced Plastic has the strength of steel but the stiffness of timber. For many years, the disadvantage of the product was its lack of fire rating. However in the 90’s, Charles helped NSW manufacturer Goninans in Newcastle build a zero rated fiberglass seat for the Tangara train. He also designed the injection moulds. Other commissions have included the design of seats for a grandstand at Randwick Race Course, the canopy to the lookout tower in Newcastle and agitation tanks for the manufacture of gelatine for Davis Gelatine, part of Goodman Fielder.

Since 1984, Charles Rickard has been the design engineer for Compass Pools Australia. In 1993, together Compass and Charles won an Australian Design Award for the ‘Maxi Pool’. This pool was revolutionary in that it was the first freestanding fibreglass pool requiring no support from any soil or other structure. Compass Pools services every state in Australia and New Zealand. It also has links with Compass Pools Europe who market the technology developed here in Australia. In 1987, Charles was the technical secretary for the revision of AS1838 and AS1839. Over the last 30 years, he has been a member SPASA. He provides a diagnostic service for any owner of a fibreglass pool. He also does a lot of work for the Office of Fair Trading.
